SUMMARY:Workshop on “Developing Regional Value Chains in E-Mobility for Zambia\, Morocco\, and DRC” (On Invitation)
DESCRIPTION:The development of electric mobility value chains in the subregion of North Africa aims to enable the continent to capture a larger share of the growing global electric vehicle battery market\, estimated to be worth US$8 trillion by 2025 and US$46 trillion by 2050.\nBuilding on an existing automotive ecosystem and potential battery ecosystem\, the North African region could initiate the development of an Electric mobility value chain in Africa\, capitalizing on the availability of needed minerals (Cobalt\, Lithium\, Nickel\, Manganese\, and Graphite) and seize the opportunity to integrate a segment or more than one segment of this value chain. \nECA North Africa launched a project to identify potential countries to initiate this regional value chain and analyze the business environment needed\, as well as the support measures and action plan for a partnership framework to develop this regional value chain. The targeted countries are Morocco\, DRC\, and Zambia. In the framework of this project\, ECA North Africa is organizing a capacity-building workshop with the following objectives: \n\nDissemination of Knowledge Products: Disseminate knowledge products tailored for the three targeted Member States (MS) regarding the potential of selected value chains in electric mobility.\nPolicy Maker Knowledge Enhancement: Enhance policymakers’ knowledge in the three targeted Member states regarding the enabling business environment in light of AfCFTA opportunities and constraints for developing an Electric Mobility Regional Value Chain (E mobility RVC).\nPolicy Maker Awareness Enhancement: Raise awareness among policymakers regarding the potential of Electric Mobility Regional Value Chains (E mobility RVC)\, encompassing economic growth\, job creation\, market opportunities\, essential prerequisites within the business environment\, and effective implementation strategies.\n\n\n \n\nConcept Note\n\n\n \n FrenchSize: 169 Kb \n \n\n EnglishSize: 98 Kb \n\n\n\n \n\nProvisional Programme\n\n\n \n FrenchSize: 196 Kb \n \n\n EnglishSize: 181 Kb

SUMMARY:Addressing Gaps and Challenges in Africa’s Middle-Income Countries
DESCRIPTION:ECA Sub-regional Office for North Africa will organize\, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Morocco)\, a webinar on “Addressing Gaps and Challenges in Africa’s Middle-Income Countries”. \nObjectives of the webinar \nLarge public debt burdens in Africa’s MICs need to be addressed for countries to have adequate funds for investment in human and physical capita and reach SDGs. The webinar will focus on two distinct but interconnected areas: (i) strengthening human capital and (ii) addressing the debt burdens. The webinar will be an opportunity for policymakers\, practitioners\, and academics to exchange experiences\, views and shed light on the following questions: \n\nOn the 1st topic\, strengthening human capital\, the discussion will center on: \n\nThe shortage of human capital is one of the main determinants of the middle-income trap. What enhancements to human capital African countries need to support developments of new sectors that are key for sustainable structural transformation?\nWhat job opportunities do African economies need to create to match the educational attainment of the labor force and prevent brain drain (and loss of human capital)?\nHow are countries’ educational systems adapting to 4th Industrial Revolution to ensure that the workforce has adequate skills to tap into the opportunities the 4IR brings? What are the best practices on the continent and in other regions?\nHow can the digital skills gap be measured and addressed?\n\nOn the 2nd topic\, addressing the debt burdens\, the discussion will center on: \n\nAmid enormous public debts globally\, how should limited concessional finance be allocated across the spectrum of developing countries\, including MICs? How should the debt burdens of African MICs be addressed\, and the looming debt crises avoided?\nAccording to the IMF forecasts\, for MICs the outlook for per income per capita growth has dimmed\, implying that growing out of debt will be increasingly challenging. How can policymakers support inclusive and sustainable growth?\nHow should the G20 Common Framework be restructured to become more common\, less political and more rule-based and encompass needs of MICs? What other debt relief initiatives are needed?\nHow can regional partnerships between African MICs and international partners help alleviate liquidity constraints and reduce public debt burdens?\n\nDate & Time: November 28\, 2023 at 2:00 pm (UTC+1)\nFormat: Online (Zoom)\nInterpretation: Arabic\, French and English\nThis webinar will be live streamed on: \n \n\n \n\nConcept Note\n\n\n \n ArabicSize: 287 Kb \n \n\n FrenchSize: 254 Kb \n \n\n EnglishSize: 269 Kb \n\n\n\n \n\nProvisional Programme\n\n\n \n Provisional ProgrammeSize: 155 Kb \n\n\n \nSpeakers\n \n\n \nAntonio Pedro\, Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support at the ECA.
